Electrical
flexibility
Electrical flexibility refers to the ability of stakeholders (producers, consumers, operators with storage assets) to adapt to variations in the electrical system, particularly those created through the production of intermittent renewable energy, by injecting or withdrawing electricity from the network. It is a key lever in the balancing of the electrical grid. Our flexibility offerings let you optimize your energy management, benefit from new income sources and play an active role in the energy transition.

Electrical flexibility,
a tool for grid balancing
To meet the targets of the energy transition, intermittent renewable energies have become a growing segment of the power system: France has set a target of achieving a 40% share in its energy mix by 2030.
At the same time, the power grid must maintain a constant balance between electricity injections and withdrawals. This is known as the supply-demand balance. Without this balance, the power grid could suffer a widespread blackout, affecting – at minimum – a large part of the region.
On the other hand, balancing the power grid is becoming increasingly complex to manage due to the thermosensitivity of the French network (1°C less in winter = 2.4 GW more consumption), the growth of intermittent energy and the boom in new electricity uses (e.g. electric vehicles, green hydrogen production, etc.).
Electrical flexibility is a powerful ally in the functioning this system and encouraging the integration of renewable energies, with tools such as dispatchable generation plants, interconnections, electricity storage and load shedding through process modulation or self-generation.
To support our customers on the road to the energy transition, Agregio Solutions is developing customized electrical flexibility solutions enabling them to:
- adapt their electricity consumption or production,
- obtain remuneration in return,
- participate in balancing the electricity system and play an active part in the energy transition.
By contributing to the energy sobriety effort and decarbonization, and facilitating the integration of renewable energies into the electricity mix, flexibility has become an essential lever in the energy transition.
Load shedding: adjust energy consumption to support the grid
Consumption flexibility, also known as “load shedding,” is a valuable electrical flexibility tool for supporting grid balancing.
This type of flexibility allows consumers to adjust their electricity consumption by reducing or interrupting it according to a power level and time period defined in a flexibility contract. This ability to reduce electricity consumption is then valorized through the appropriate market mechanisms, enabling the consumer to obtain remuneration for the service rendered.
There are two load shedding methods for industrial or commercial consumers: modulating their operational processes and thus reducing their electricity consumption in whole or in part, or starting up an on-site power generation unit to take over when appropriate.
In this way, load shedding programs make it possible to meet a number of challenges:
- Streamline investment needs in the power system by reducing electricity consumption rather than increasing production,
- Reduce CO2 emissions through load shedding via the modulation process, by limiting the use of carbon-intensive thermal generation resources during peak periods,
- Diversify revenues and improve the energy performance of industrial or service-sector players involved in load shedding.
Are you an industrial or service company looking to reduce your electricity bill and find new sources of income, while at the same time relieving pressure on the power grid during peak use periods? We can help you valorize your load shedding capabilities or modulate your energy consumption through suitable mechanisms.
Load shedding: a socially responsible way to diversify your income
Electrical flexibility refers to the ability of stakeholders (producers, consumers, operators with storage assets) to adapt to variations in the electrical system, particularly those created through the production of intermittent renewable energy, by injecting or withdrawing electricity from the network.
All stakeholders in the power system can contribute to balancing the grid:
- electricity consumers, whether private individuals or professionals such as industrial or tertiary companies, e.g. a factory or shopping center,
- producers of renewable or thermal electricity,
- or stakeholders with electricity storage assets.
Metallurgy, water treatment, paper mills, supermarkets, data centers, food processing, hospitals, the automotive industry, waste treatment… a wide range of industrial and tertiary stakeholders can benefit from flexibility.
With Agregio Solutions, customers’ electrical flexibilities are valorized on mechanisms adapted to their profiles:
- Capacity mechanism and decarbonized flexibility call for tenders (AOFD) for industrial and large commercial customers with the capacity to switch off either by process interruption or by self-generation, with an advance notice period of D-1.
- Rapid and Complementary Reserve (RRC) and System Services (primary or secondary reserve) for players with storage assets or HEI (Hyper Electro-Intensive) industrial customers with the capacity to switch off with an intra-day notice period.
